Search engine optimization (SEO) takes a lot of work or so the prevailing wisdom goes. Well there is some truth to that, but SEO is also comprised of several small steps you can take. Done separately they may not seem like much. Collectively, these steps can help your site move up in the rankings and bring new customers to your business.

Content rules. Content has always been important and will always be important. But that content goes beyond articles to include info graphics, photos, videos and charts. Add content regularly, but ensure that it is only your best stuff.

Internal links. The focus is often on external links, but it is internal links that can make a big difference for your SEO efforts. Make sure that you link to like sites and that your links have a purpose, such as a call to action.

PageRank is dead. Google no longer updates PageRank. You will still see PageRank on older websites and pages, but Google no longer exports changes to the toolbar. Thus, you should concentrate on the SEO factors that matter and follow Google’s rules everywhere else.

Website loading factor is important. Your site may be clean and look uncluttered, but if it takes more than a second or two to load, then there is a problem. Remove any widgets or spurious content that may slow down your site. A fast loading site represents a “vote” from the search engines that your site is one worth visiting.

File extensions are irrelevant. The file extension you use has no bearing on your website. So, use .htm or .html or .php with impunity and don’t worry about what the faux SEO experts have to say. There is no consequence to the extension whatsoever.

Identify your ownership. You own your URL, but you are hiding behind another name or have requested anonymity. While that move may seem logical on your part, it can result in a penalty by Google as the search giant may wonder if you have something to hide?

A call to action matters. Your articles should not just impart useful information. There should also be a call to action somewhere and for each one. That call may link to another article or advise you to buy a product.

Link out with impunity. How should you handle your external link strategy? With care. Nevertheless, don’t be shy about linking to other websites. And do so frequently. But be careful who earns your link — you never want to send your readers to a site of questionable value.

Avoid paid links. Paid links are out. Let me reword this —paid links will get you into a lot of trouble. Forbidden by Google, they no longer impart the PageRank advantage that was common five years ago. Still, there are some people who are under the impression that they are useful. They are not and should be avoided!

Get everyone involved. Your website does not need to be your pet project alone. Get others involved, including your CEO. To have some “name” people as contributors can elevate your site. Your CEO doesn’t have to pen the article, but he could still contribute. Make it a monthly endeavor, then see what happens!

Keep at your SEO work and you will begin to see some results. Not immediately, but most certainly eventually. Your work will bear fruit only if you keep at. Don’t be impatient, but do be consistent. Taking your foot off the accelerator means that your competitors will find a way to race past you.
