The New York Times has been the frontrunner in the world of journalism since its inception in 1851. Throughout its history, one of the New York-based publication’s primary objectives is to bring her readers to the forefronts. Now it has a new strategy to achieve this objective – capitalizing on internet and VR technology.

With the advent and rapid growth of virtual reality (VR) technology, The New York Times is also leading the pack by incorporating VR technology to upgrade its news journalistic dexterity. Instead of the expected games app, the publication is implementing the technology for presenting stories and news features in a more immersive manner. Let’s see what this is all about.

The New York Times Virtual Reality App

Just one month after announcing its partnership with Google for VR film production, The New York Times launched its new VR app in November, 2015. The app, which is titled NYT VR, debuted with two feature films:

● The Displaced

● Walking New York

With the app, along with your headsets and an optional cardboard viewing device, you will be able to simulate richly immersive VR content from across the world. NYT VR app is available for free for both Android and iOS platforms. You can achieve all this with the power of the internet, just like what Clockspot and JobProgress has done.

You can down the app for free from the App Store or Google Play, for an iPhone or Android phone, respectively. You can use NYT VR app on its own, without Google Cardboard. When playing videos in non-Google Cardboard mode, you should move your smartphone to look around you. Just give it a try to get the whole sense of it.

However, bear in mind that the experience is far more captivating when using the special virtual reality viewer – Google Cardboard. This is a cheap box made from cardboard and has two lenses inside. If you are not a New York Times subscriber, you can purchase one from Google, or just get instructions from Google on how to make one.

Once you get your Google Cardboard hardware, you place your smartphone in the box and run an app specifically designed to work With Google Cardboard. This app will display two images on your phone screen, lining up in the Cardboard lenses. When viewed through Google Cardboard, the images look like they are in 3D.

Apart from the two main films, there are also some journalistic pieces that you can view right away. In one of the pieces, you find yourself in the middle of renowned street artist JR’s studio. If you look around with your Cardboard on, you will see yourself actually in the studio, with JR’s colleagues as well as the art equipment, discussing about various projects in New York.

The New York Time’s mission is not only to report on a story from a distance, but also to bring its readers to the story. With NYT VR app, coupled with power of the internet, the New York-based publication has taken a great leap ahead in achieving this mission. You can use the free phone app along with your headsets to view richly immersed content from across the world. The app can be used on its own or with a special virtual reality viewer for a more compelling experience.
